CASTLE PARK COLCHESTER NAMED AS BRITAIN’S BEST PARK 2009

Castle Park in Colchester has been awarded the prestigious accolade of the best park in the UK 2009, in Britain’s Best Park competition sponsored by petrol lawn mower engine manufacturers Briggs & Stratton.

Managed by Colchester Borough Council, the park beat off tough competition from others across the country to win the top prize.

Parks were judged on criteria including environment, design, usability, access, maintenance and community involvement. Castle Park’s high levels of maintenance, traditional setting and rich heritage particularly impressed the judging panel.

Ian Small, business development manager for Briggs & Stratton UK Ltd, said, “The park is situated in the heart of Colchester, it provides residents and visitors with a beautiful green space to enjoy all year round, it has some fantastic historical features and is a worthy winner of the top prize."

Speaking about the award Councillor Martin Hunt, Leisure Portfolio Holder, Colchester Borough Council, said: “This award is fantastic news and an accolade to our dedicated parks staff, friends groups and rangers who have worked hard to maintain the jewel in Colchester’s crown. The grounds provide an exceptional setting and we welcome all residents and visitors to come and enjoy Britain’s Best Park.”

Castle Park is maintained on behalf of Colchester Borough Council by Veolia Environmental Services Landscapes. Andrew Fulcher, contract manager for the company said: “We have worked closely with the council to provide a park that can be enjoyed by local people and visitors all year round and its great that these efforts have been recognised.”
